Shaken passengers spent the night in an airport hotel after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

The My Travel flight, which took off from Newcastle for Malta yesterday with 220 passengers, was diverted to Gatwick with a fuel indicator fault.

Firefighters from West Sussex Fire Brigade and the British Airport Authority Fire Service rushed to the runway to meet the plane at around 7pm.

The passengers were expected to fly out again today.

It is the fourth emergency landing at Gatwick in a matter of weeks.

A plane carrying 197 passengers had to turn back and make an emergency landing after an hour in the air early last week and a Boeing 757 was diverted from Birmingham after crew began experiencing handling difficulties three weeks ago.

On the same night, 70 passengers had to leave a plane which was forced to land when crew smelled burning in the cockpit.
