Any band calling its debut album Asleep At The Back is never going to be overly concerned about whipping audiences into hysterical states of nervous excitement.

It was no surprise, then, as Elbow paddled on stage atop gently rolling waves of soft keyboards before lowering themselves into a set that never threatened to turn the amps up to 11.

But causing seismic shifts isn't really the point of the experienced five-piece. Instead, they concentrated on melody and mood, with singer Guy Garvey's powerful vocals frequently the centrepiece of each song.

He may look like a ginger David Brent, with the bank manager's suit he sported for the first few tracks only adding to the image, but he is a fine frontman.

Much of the material on the night, taken from their debut album and latest recording Cast Of Thousands, followed a similar structure of quiet, quiet, quiet, loud, quiet, quiet. The few tracks to deviate from this, including singles Newborn and Fallen Angel, were all the better for it.

However, for all their sonic strengths, Elbow seem destined to be a band several slots behind the headline.
