The Argus missed a great opportunity with the motorcycle rally on Madeira Drive, Brighton, which took place at the weekend.

What a wonderful sight the motorcycles and scooters made, lined up the whole length of Madeira Drive, six-deep in many places.

The event was the annual reunion of the Ace Cafe in London. I was reliably informed it was the tenth such rally since it was reorganised in 1993.

The varied selection of motorcycles was a joy to behold.

Not only did the motorcycles stretch along Madeira Drive but went some distance west of the Brighton Pier.

They were parked everywhere - the Aquarium Island, the pavements, cycle path and the road.

The rock 'n' roll band hurled their music out across the beach, entertaining the crowds of bikers and fans alike.

It was nostalgic to see bikes and scooters of another age intermingled with machines of the 21st Century.

Those old machines included the Vespa and Lambretta scooters of the Sixties.

Then there was the red GPO telegraph boys' BSA 125cc motor cycles. Many lads became telegraph boys just so they could ride these.

It was great to see the tolerance displayed by the police and traffic wardens in allowing so many bikes to be parked in some rather strange places.

It was estimated that about 40,000 machines came to Brighton to take part in the rally.

May I suggest that next year everyone should take the opportunity to see it, and to The Argus that it has nothing to do with the Mods and Rockers.
