Do police officers have to pass an intelligence test before being promoted? I seriously doubt it.

I refer to just three of many recent inexplicable decisions taken by Sussex police chiefs.

A Worthing policeman said he would be only writing to the parents of children who had been trying to set fire to cats while his officers stood by and watched.

He said no arrests were made because the cats had not been unduly harmed.

Crime rates in central Brighton have gone down due to police being installed in police boxes but now that intelligent idea has been scrapped.

Now Worthing police have announced a crackdown on crime to be known as, wait for it, Operation Resolve III.

It runs for six days and nights. I can confidently predict a dramatic fall in crime during this period, to be followed by a big increase starting just two days later.

What could be more absurd than to announce to hooligans and criminals just when there will be bobbies on the streets for a change?

Heaven help us.
