Campaigners fighting to save ancient woodland from housing developers are planning a protest.

Protect Our Woodland! is holding a demonstration and public meeting on Saturday to win more support.

Worthing Borough Council has earmarked the land in West Durrington for more than 800 homes.

But there have already been several demonstrations against the scheme to widen and straighten Titnore Lane to provide access to the new housing and industrial estate.

Protesters said this would result in the loss of hundreds of trees in an area of ancient woodland.

Campaigners from Protect Our Woodland! will stage their latest protest outside Durrington Community Centre on Saturday at midday.

Spokesman John Clark urged local residents to attend and have their say.

He said: "This proposed development is the most controversial subject Worthing has seen in a generation."

Last year, protesters collected 2,300 signatures on a petition calling for the woods to be left alone.

There is growing concern the last green fields in the borough will be turned into a giant suburb lacking shops, leisure facilities and proper transport links.

A major exhibition was staged earlier in the year by developers in a bid to win public support for the scheme prior to putting in a planning application.
