I congratulate whoever is trying to ban smoking in all public areas and on the streets where smokers toss their stubs and cartons down for council workers to remove.

I have been campaigning for more than 40 years to get this stopped in all cafes, restaurants, transport (especially aircraft), waiting rooms and hospitals.

At last someone is seeing sense. It has been stopped in some of the places I mention but we are all paying for smokers' suicidal habit.

They should get no hospital treatment when they get sick. Putting these pictures on the boxes won't stop them either.

I have seen people smoking when driving and the soot and ash goes all over the dashboard, the floor and the seats, often setting them on fire.

I remember a couple of years ago when one brainless idiot threw one of these things out and it landed in a child's pushchair, setting it alight. Luckily, the toddler was taken out quickly and taken to safety by its mother.

I speak from great experience as my own father died at the age of 65 in 1959 with asthma and bronchitis after spending a week in Brighton General Hospital in an oxygen tent.

My mother was breathing in all this filth for 40 years.
