As thousands cram themselves on to Sussex beaches during the sweltering weather, the smart cookies are getting sun baked at their nearest lido.

These old-fashioned open-air pools enjoyed their best times in the Twenties and Thirties and many have since fallen into disrepair or closed forever.

But for a dedicated group of volunteers there would not be any in Sussex at all. Thanks to the actions of these hard-working people, residents from all over the county can nip to Saltdean, Woodingdean, Lewes or Arundel to have a refreshing dip while avoiding huge crowds on the coast.

The only catch is lidos need to make enough money in just a few months to sustain them for the rest of the year.

They need our support in the summer to last the winter and, judging by the fun had by our waterwing-wearing reporter Steve Rogers, these pools are worth every penny.
