Brighton beach is the bookies' favourite to be the warmest in the UK this August.

Ladbrokes.com has teamed up with the London Met Office to offer odds on which UK resort will record the highest average temperature.

Brighton has been listed as the early 3/1 favourite.

The sea temperature has reached its warmest level this year off the Sussex coast with a reading of 20C (68F) yesterday.

This equals readings taken during the long hot summer of 1976, although there were higher levels during hot spells in the Nineties.

If the warm weather continues, there is a chance that the sea temperature will rise during the next few days.

Sussex Ambulance took 648 calls on Tuesday on one of its busiest days of the year.

A man was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after getting into difficulties in the sea opposite the Grand Hotel in St Leonards and an angler was taken to hospital after experiencing chest pains while out at sea.
