It was incorrect to say East Brighton College of Media Arts (Comart) parents "have until the end of this month to send their comments to the council" about the future of the school (The Argus, July 22).

What we needed by the end of July were outline proposals for alternative options for the site.

We explained this to the school's governors and staff in late May, giving them two months to work up proposals.

And that's what we were working towards at the public meeting on July 16.

We will work through the summer on the details of these proposals to make sure they are viable in terms of finance, curriculum and the health and safety of students.

Both the Department for Education and Skills and the city's taxpayers will want assurances that any plans for the future of Comart will be viable in these three key areas.

We will then consult on all viable options in the autumn.

I would emphasise that no decisions were made about the future of Comart except that its current situation cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely.

I call on local people who are interested in the future of the school to engage with us.

Shouting from the sidelines alone will not achieve this.
