Police in uniform will staff a stall at Pride for the first time in an effort to recruit gay officers.

Brighton and Hove officers will share a stand with representatives from the Gay Police Association (GPA) at the event in Preston Park, Brighton, on Saturday.

It is the first time the GPA has teamed up with Sussex Police, which is promoting its "diverse communities need uniform support" recruitment campaign.

A spokeswoman said: "While there are record numbers wanting to join the police it is important that Sussex Police reflects the diverse communities it serves.

"To that end there are specific recruitment initiatives aimed at encouraging people from traditionally under-represented groups to apply."

One man who joined the force at Pride four years ago is PC Stuart Block. Now deputy chairman of the Sussex branch of the GPA, he said Sussex Police made him feel welcome and reassured.

He said: "I have not felt any homophobic vibes. As with the Black Police Association the force regularly consults us about sensitive issues and policies."

Adrian Rutherford, Brighton and Hove police human resources manager, said: "The joint stand is our way of showing the newly-formed Sussex branch of the Gay Police Association our support."

PC Mark Andrews, from the Gay Police Association, said: "We want to show the lesbian and gay community of Brighton and those visiting from other areas that there is support for lesbian and gay officers in the police service and the GPA-Sussex is a recognised and fully constituted association within Sussex Police."
