Some of Adur District Council's antiques are about to go under the auctioneer's hammer.

The furniture is being sold at auction on August 15 at Rupert Toovey & Co of Spring Gardens, Washington.

There are six lots, which include pieces from the days of Southwick and Shoreham urban district councils.

Unfortunately, the items have been taking up a lot of space, which the Civic Centre needs to use.

The proceeds from the sale will enable the council to buy modern office furniture that is more in keeping with a modern business.

The antiques up for grabs include an arts and crafts oak library bookcase, a large oak dining table, a George V oak writing table and a Victorian mahogany bookcase.

Adur council leader Neil Parkin said: "Although it is sad to see these things go, we have to move forward.

"It will be good to think of them having another life after Adur.

"If furniture could speak, I bet it could tell us some interesting stories of decisions made over the years."

The auction takes place at 10am. For more information, call 01903 891955.
