Roads in West Sussex with double yellow lines are still off-limits for parking, even though street enforcement signs will be removed.

Changes in legislation means the "At Any Time" signs on the pavement alongside double yellow lines are no longer required.

In order to minimise the confusion as 20,000 signs are removed from roadsides around the county, a trial will be carried out between St Paul's Road and Broyle Road in Chichester.

Tex Pemberton, county council Cabinet member for strategic environmental services, said: "The benefits of removing 20,000 signs are clearly obvious and a step in the right direction.

"There is no doubt we are over-signing to the detriment of the environment and I am pleased to see this change in legislation, which means we can at least start to reverse some of that.

"There will be a cost saving too with the greatly reduced need for maintenance of all those signs we will remove.

"In order to cut down on potential confusion the county council aims to remove these signs in a quick yet cost-effective manner."

Double-yellow lines indicate there is no parking at any time and the police and traffic wardens can issue fixed penalty tickets to motorists who park on them.
