The head of West Sussex's health services visited Worthing to publicise artwork commissioned by the NHS.

Lisa Rodrigues, chief executive for West Sussex Health and Social Care NHS Trust, visited Worthing Museum on Friday to receive a piece of art commissioned by the trust from people at the Old School House in Shoreham.

The centre provides a supportive environment for people who have experienced mental illness.

As well as art and craft sessions, the centre offers complementary therapy, computer facilities and teaching and even regular trips abroad.

Ms Rodrigues congratulated the artists who had produced the first image, entitled Beach Huts, a large group textile piece using strong bold colours to depict a typical South Coast seaside town.

She said: "We enjoy our relationship with The Old School House and will be proud to put their art on display."

The pieces will be part of an exhibition entitled Making Waves, which shows a wide range of mixed-media art and craft work by users from 15 to 20 local day centres and community groups.

The museum is showing more than 100 pieces of art and craftwork, with more than 600 further pieces to be included at an exhibition at the Assembly Hall.

Meanwhile, Worthing Museum has announced its main summer exhibition will be "Layers", a display of quilting opening on Saturday.

A spokesman said: "We are delighted to be exhibiting ten of the South's finest and best-known quilters, including Gail Lawther, Dorothy Stapleton and Leslie Morgan.

"The exhibition will delight textile enthusiasts as well as people who just love colour and modern art."

The exhibition will be at the museum from August 9 until October 4. For further details, telephone 01903 239999.
