People in Shoreham are joining the growing clamour over noisy horns on South Central's new trains.

The klaxons on the Electrostar units are twice as loud as those fitted to the old slam-door trains.

Janet Dakin, of Church Green, said she was woken up at 7am every day by the deafening blasts, which sound at 30-minute intervals throughout the day.

She has lived in the street for seven years and shares the house with her daughter and granddaughter.

Ms Dakin, 42, said: "They have decided to use their horns first thing in the morning and no one can get any sleep.

"Every time my baby granddaughter nods off she is woken up again.

"We have written to South Central and they have given us a list of situations where horns should be sounded, which includes near level crossings.

"What are we supposed to do? Just put up with it?"

South Central trains has said action will only be taken once the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has completed a review of the horns.

The RSSB is conducting a review following complaints from residents across Sussex.

Residents in Brighton and Hove have held demonstrations in their pyjamas to get the ultra-loud hooters modified.

The regulator expects to publish new rules on sounding the horns early this month.

Councils have powers to issue individual train operators with a noise abatement notice under the 1990 Environmental Protection Act.
