After staging its first Wagner earlier in the season, Glyndebourne now stages its first operatta and chooses one of the most popular in the repertoire.
Die Fledermaus is Johann Strauss II's tale of drinking, adultery and excess in 19th Century Vienna here updated to the fin de siecle by director Stephen Lawless.
It stars Sir Thomas Allen as Von Eiseinstein, a man of means who skips jail to go to a ball where he is intrigued by a beautiful masked woman. She, of course, turns out to be his wife. Also there is the Eisenstein's parlour maid, pretending to be an actress, the prison governor is there pretending to be a Marquis and as you might imagine, complications ensue.
