Two men who died when their diving expedition ended in tragedy have been named by police.

They were Clyde Warner, 56, from Slough, and Martin Reed, who was in his 50s and lived in Uxbridge, Middlesex.

The pair were part of a party of seven friends exploring the wreck of the Bessel, 15 miles off the coast of Shoreham on Tuesday.

Police are investigating why all three shot up too quickly.

Mr Warner was pulled on to the chartered dive boat the Michelle Mary by skipper Ivan Warren and airlifted to hospital where he died after suffering the bends.

Mr Reed's body was recovered yesterday afternoon after remaining members of the dive party returned to the scene with police and searched the seabed.

A third man, from the Sutton area of Surrey, was released from hospital after treatment in a decompression chamber.

Emergency services were called just before 12.30pm on Tuesday when Mr Warren, who described the group as close friends, made a distress call.

He reported two of the men had been injured after coming up too quickly from the shipwreck 63m below the sea's surface and a third man was missing.

The two injured men were flown by coastguard helicopter to Portsmouth's Queen Alexandra Hospital, where Mr Warner later died.

A police underwater search team is examining the trio's diving equipment in an attempt to find out what happened.
