Neil Wray is hopeful he may have won a place in the England boxing team for a forthcoming international competition.

The Southwick Amateur Boxing Club light-welterweight joined a group of the best amateurs in the country at an England training camp in Manchester last weekend.

Wray said: "It went really well. I cannot see any reason why I should not be considered for selection for the team to box in the Commonwealth Federations tournament.

"There was no-one who stood out in my weight and sparring went well so I have a good chance."

Wray enjoyed the experience.

He said: "We spent a lot of time working on different skills and how to box south paws, who we are coming up against more frequently.

"It was a totally different level and different style of coaching. We concentrated on boxing all the time, jabbing and moving, picking up points and not getting drawn in to fights.

"I felt I learnt a lot of the coaches and also from watching the other boys."

Wray hopes to hear within the next few days whether he has been selected for the tournament in Kuala Lumpur in August.

He added: "We were told by the coaches that even if we did not get a call-up for this tournament there would be others later in the year which they may call us for."
