There's nothing Rown the Labrador and his canine companion Buzz like more after a hard day's barking than to sit down and enjoy a gourmet meal by candlelight.

Not for them a bowl of unappetising dried biscuits or reformed meat of some unidentifiable origin.

Instead they tuck into tasty treats such as cheesy cats and lollipups.

And thanks to their health-conscious owner Samantha King-Grant, they don't have to worry about expanding waistlines as she has designed a range of food products for dogs which keeps them looking lean.

Samantha, 32, of Briarcroft Road, Brighton, began making food for her own picky pooches.

Now it has become a successful business called Dog Dogs Bakery, with a range which expanded to include special doggy birthday cakes.

Samantha said: "It's very popular in North America, where I got the idea.

"There are also no preservatives or additives in the food.

"I think there is a big call for it in Brighton.

"I was recently at the dog show on Brighton Racecourse and there was a lot of interest.

"The best-sellers are cheesy cats and lollipups, which are made of peanut butter dipped in carob - a chocolate substitute for dogs.

"My vet has given me a ten per cent discount because my two dogs are so healthy."

Samantha's dogs have proved enthusiastic guinea pigs for the various products.

"When I started making them, they tried to steal them so I had to make the counter in the kitchen higher."

Samantha, who started the business in September, said: "Birthday cakes are also popular. They can be made out of anything you want and I can write messages on them."

And for those self-conscious pups wanting to spruce up their love lives, there's always the mint rock cakes - breath- freshening biscuits to make your dog kissable.
