A woman who battled to keep a care home open on behalf of her mother says residents are being kept in the dark about their future.

Despite pleas to the Prime Minister, a High Court case and countless letters and petitions, Norma Dudley lost her bid to save the Moreton Centre care home, St Leonards, which is due to close in October.

Yesterday she hit out leaders of the East Sussex County Council, which owns the property, accusing them of failing to inform remaining residents, such as her mother Clara, 86, where they will go when the home closes.

Mrs Dudley, from Walthamstow, East London, said: "Users of Moreton, who have repeatedly asked East Sussex County Council to tell them where the alternative provision will be when the centre is closed, are still unaware of where respite care will be re-provided in Hastings and St Leonards despite asking representatives of the county council over several months."

Relatives of the three remaining long-stay residents fear for their lives. They claim the shock of moving could kill them.

Supporters of the campaign have called on the council to produce figures justifying the centre's closure.

The next meeting of the Rage group, which campaigns against the closure, will be at St Luke's church hall, Silverhill, Hastings, this Sunday at 3pm.
