Redevelopment plans at a boat works could get the go-ahead despite objections.

The proposals for Orkney Boats site on the Ford Lane Business Park in Ford are due to be decided at a planning meeting tomorrow.

Developers want permission to redevelop the site into 15 units with space for parking.

But Ford Parish Council is objecting, along with a local resident.

The parish council says Ford Lane is already undergoing repairs due to the number of HGVs from the surrounding industrial estates.

It says there are numerous units within the industrial estates which have been vacant over a long period and there is no need for a further 15 units.

A letter of objection from a local resident says the development would be unneighbourly and it is out of scale with the existing development.

However, planning officers at Arun District Council are recommending the plans are granted conditional approval.

A report to councillors says: "The existing buildings appear to be in a poor state of repair and are mainly of one storey in height.

"The new buildings are single-storey but are higher. A condition to control subsequent extensions and mezzanines will control the intensity of development and, to some extent, traffic.

"The taller buildings will be more visible but are of similar height and scale to commercial buildings to the north.

"The existing and proposed landscaping will mitigate the effect on the character of the area."
