Parents and children took to the streets today to demand a safer walk to school.

Many youngsters who attend Balfour Infant and Junior Schools in Balfour Road, Brighton, have to cross the busy dual-carriageway Surrenden Road.

Parents who have requested a pedestrian crossing say they have been told their plea is not being treated as a priority.

Kate Heath, of Harrington Road, a parent and governor at Balfour Junior School, was there with her two children aged nine and ten.

She said: "We want the council to provide crossings so our children can walk safely to school.

"The council say this is not a high priority area because there have been no accidents, but we don't want to have to wait until then."

Tory councillor Ann Norman said: "We had mums, dads, toddlers, buggies and banners there today.

"Two police officers helped stopped the traffic.

"It must be absolutely terrifying if you are attempting to cross with small children plus, in one case, a double buggy containing small twins."
