Work will start this week on the building of Brighton's new multi-million pound library.
Foundation works for the new Brighton library in Jubilee Street were finished yesterday.
This included clearing the site, removing Japanese knotweed and demolishing buildings in North Road.
Workers also installed drains, ducts, cabling and other services for the library and new civic square.
City council leader Ken Bodfish said: "Everyone working on this important project is extremely grateful to people at Bright Start Nursery, the Prince Regent leisure centre and all the surrounding businesses and homes for their patience.
"The £45 million library scheme will complete the regeneration of a large area in the heart of Brighton with the creation of a new square, hotel, residential, retail and leisure buildings."
The library is funded under the government's public private finance initiative. It has been designed by local architects Lomax, Cassidy and Edwards and London-based firm Bennetts (correct Bennetts) Associates.
The current estimated completion date is December next year.
