Hastings manager George Wakeling is close to quitting after relegation from the Premier Division.

Wakeling, who took over at the Pilot Field in October 2000, will talk to committee members next week about his future.

Wakeling has enjoyed a successful three years with United. He guided them to the Eastern Division title last season and the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in their 107-year history in November.

However, a run of just three wins in 28 league games since the cup exit meant United were relegated from the Premier Division after just one season back in the top flight.

Wakeling said: "This season has been so disappointing for everyone at the club, the supporters, the players and me as well.

"I don't know whether it is right for me to carry on next season or whether it is better for me and the club that I move on.

"I will talk with the committee over the next week and take it from there, but as it stands I don't know what the situation will be for next season."

Wakeling, who is based in south London, has been linked with a return to Ryman League Bromley, where he spent eight years during the 1990s before leaving for Ashford Town.

Wakeling admits he received offers from several different clubs during this season, but insists this has nothing to do with him considering his future with United.

He said: "I'm just looking at the whole picture and trying to decide if it is right to carry on.

"I had a couple of offers but there is not one on the table at the moment. That has got nothing to do with it, it's all about me and Hastings and whether it is better for me to move on."

Wakeling's decision will be influenced by the budget for next season which is now uncertain after club owner Mick Maplesden announced last week he is stepping down due to health reasons.

He told fans during last Saturday's final home game of the season against Stafford Rangers he intends to sell his shares and the club are now looking for a new owner.

Lottery winner Maplesden became the main shareholder five years ago when he bought the club from Mark Gardiner.

Club secretary Tony Cosens believes the situation may take some time to resolve. He said: "George (Wakeling) will talk to the committee when they have got an idea about what the budget is going to be for next season.

Hopefully that will be in the next week, but with Mick (Maplesden) leaving it may take a bit longer.

"As far as I know there has not been an offer yet and these things do tend to take a bit of time. Mick has decided to sell his shares, so the person who buys them will become the new owner, so it is quite a big thing.

"Mick will be missed, there is no doubt about that, and I'm sure everyone at the club is grateful for what he has done. But his reasons are understandable and I think he just wants to step down and have a bit of a rest."
