Sussex opening bowlers Jason Lewry and James Kirtley were put to the sword when Warwickshire's acting skipper Ashley Giles chose to bat at Edgbaston this morning.
Sussex showed two changes from Wednesday's one-day game when they beat Hampshire in the C&G Trophy.
Lewry and Tony Cottey reclaimed their customary championship places at the expense of Mike Yardy and Billy Taylor, and Kevin Innes was left out.
Coach Peter Moores said: "Kevin is 85 per cent fit but he couldn't guarantee to last four days and there's no need to risk him."
Off-spinner Mark Davis retained his place alongside Mushtaq Ahmed.
Warwickshire openers, Tony Frost and Jonathan Trott, brought up the 50 in the ninth over, at which time Robin Martin-Jenkins replaced Kirtley at the City End.
Trott, making his debut, had greeted Kirtley with two classic cuts to the point boundary.
In his attempt to split the troublesome partnership Chris Adams moved Kirtley to the pavilion end and replaced Martin-Jenkins with Mushtaq.
It was Kirtley who made the breakthrough, bowling Frost for 37 with the score on 86.
