A woman is fighting for her life after a tragic car smash in which her boyfriend and his mother were killed.

Dominic West, 20, and his mother Heather, 47, died in the accident on their way to a family holiday.

Dominic's ten-year-old sister Gaby escaped with cuts and bruises.

His girlfriend Jodie, 21, suffered serious injuries and is critically-ill in intensive care.

Dominic, of Coombe Rise, Worthing, was driving his girlfriend and family to Devon when his Citroen Saxo was in a collision with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction on the A3 at Hindhead, Surrey, on Monday.

Yesterday relatives spoke of their devastation and paid tribute to Dominic, a retained firefighter, and his mother, who was an administrative assistant at a doctor's surgery near their home.

Dominic's father Richard said Heather was a woman who lived for her family.

He said: "She was a lovely lady who liked gardening and loved her house."

Jodie is being treated at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where Gaby was treated for cuts and bruises before being discharged. She is now staying with grandparents.

Mr West said: "My daughter walked away. She is the most well-adjusted of us all. It's a delayed kind of reaction.

"The doctor thinks it could take a year. She was locked in the car with her mother and brother dead.

"I'm not sure how long it took to get her out."

The family had lived in Saudia Arabia, Italy and Greece before settling in Worthing.

Dominic, a Man Utd fan, and his brother Jamie, 22, went to Worthing High School. Dominic belonged to a local football club and was a keen golfer.

Jamie, 22, said: "He was loved by everyone and had lots of friends."

Rhys Price, Worthing High assistant headteacher, said: "He will be a great loss to the local and sporting communities."

The driver of the lorry, a 46-year-old man from Chessington, escaped with cuts but was left in shock after the smash.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened south of the Hindhead crossroads just past the junction with Hazel Grove at 2.30pm.
