Crawley boss Francis Vines admits the league title is next on his list after Reds completed a cup double in dramatic style.

The Dr Martens League premier division side beat Eastbourne Borough 6-5 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes and extra time.

Reds captain Marc Pullen scored the deciding kick after Crawley keeper Andy Little had saved three of Borough's eight spot kicks.

The win was made sweeter as Crawley had played the majority of the game with ten men after Ernie Cooksey was sent off on 25 minutes.

With the Dr Martens League Cup already in the trophy cabinet, making this season the most successful in Crawley's history, Vines has now got his eye on the league title.

He said: "It has been great to win the two cups and I just hope we can build on it and progress further next year. I am not making any promises but the league is the one we want now. I would exchange these two trophies for the league trophy and that is going to be our aim for next season.

"You can win the league by winning 27 games in a season and that is what we will be trying to do. The club has never won two big trophies in a season, so there is a first time for everything and let's hope the league is next."

Vines praised the character in his squad after seeing his side win their fourth game in a week. A 2-0 home win against Halesowen last Tuesday, which gave Reds the league cup, came just two days before a 1-0 home win against premier division champions Tamworth.

They then ended their league season on Saturday with a 5-0 against Weymouth to finish in seventh place.

Vines said: "I asked the lads going into the last week to give me everything they had and that is exactly what they have done. I couldn't have asked for any more from any of them and they have got the rewards."

The finale to the cup final gave some much needed drama to an otherwise dull game. Borough, who had taken the first penalty, had scored five of their six spot kicks when Little saved Mark Goodwin's attempt.

A handful of Crawley players, unaware Reds still had a kick left, celebrated prematurely, charging towards Little from the centre circle before bundling him into the net thinking they had won.

The penalty competition was delayed as the red-faced Crawley players trotted back to halfway. Pullen then stroked the winning kick into the bottom right hand corner to spark more euphoric scenes.

The result was harsh on last season's cup winners Borough, who dominated the game after Cooksey was dismissed for kicking out at Matt Smart on 25 minutes.

However, Borough paid the price for not converting possession into chances.

Their best opportunity fell to the perfect man in Scott Ramsay, who has scored 38 goals in what could be his first and last season at the club if talk of a transfer to Brentford is to be believed.

It came after 107 minutes when Goodwin did brilliantly to beat two defenders, Ian Payne and Pullan, before squaring the ball across the face of the goal.

Ramsay had for once eluded his markers at the back post and looked odds-on to convert from close range, but he scuffed his effort giving Little the chance to get across his goal to save.

A win in front of an all-time record attendance for Priory Lane would have been the icing on the cake for Borough boss Garry Wilson who had already guided his side to promotion from the eastern division this season.

He said: "Of course we're all disappointed, but we can't be too hard on ourselves because we have surpassed all expectations already this season.

"It would have been good to go out on a high, but we have got to remember what we have done over the last seven or eight months.

"We had enough chances to win the game which was the frustrating thing and I think the sending off even helped them more than it helped us.

"We had started well and I thought we were going to win, but when their player went off, they sat back and defended for the rest of the game."

Wilson is already planning for next season where his side will have the chance to get their revenge when they meet Crawley for a derby in the league.

He said: "We know we have a lot of work to do over the summer and that starts now really.

"We will have a bit of a rest, but we are always looking to strengthen our squad because the aims of next season will be a lot different to this.

"There is going to be much more pressure on everybody to do well and stay in that division and we want to make sure this club continues to progress and keeps developing like it has over the last few years."
