Further roadworks will soon by carried out on one of the busiest streets in Sussex.

Earlier this year, drivers faced delays while part of the A259 coast road was resurfaced between West Street and Pool Valley.

Now Brighton and Hove City Council says work is scheduled to start on more work from Monday, May 12.

The task is to strengthen the A259 underneath the road so that it can carry the 40,000 vehicles which drive over it every day.

Unlike most roads which have solid foundations, part of the A259 between the piers is built over unique structures known as the King's Road arches.

Built in the second half of the nineteenth century, they form part of the Lower Esplanade. Some go right under the road as far as the hotels on the other side.

Brighton and Hove City Council is strengthening arches 158 to 163 under the road near West Street by drilling in steel anchors and covering the tops of the structures with concrete. The road will then be reinstated.

If money is available, the southern pavement between West Street and Brighton Pier will also be resurfaced later in the year.

During the ten-week scheme, the contractors will be working up to 10pm to minimise the construction period.
