A burglar who stole sex toys from a woman's home has been jailed for three years.

David Smith, 27, took a pink dildo and an egg-shaped vibrator from the woman's bedroom at her flat in Hove.

Lewes Crown Court heard how homeless Smith also stole bank cards, a mobile telephone, a purse and cash in the burglary in January.

Prosecutor Sara-Lise Howe said the woman had left her flat in Sackville Road to walk her dog in the afternoon but had left the landing window open.

She said: "A neighbour had seen the defendant climbing over roofs and walls at the rear and saw him disappear through the back window into the flat. He reappeared after a few minutes and had items concealed under his top.

"The neighbour contacted police.

"Officers saw the defendant walking in neighbouring Clarendon Road, Hove, and were handed 12 assorted bank cards in the woman's name, together with a mobile telephone.

"In addition, her purse was taken with money to the value of £39."

Smith, who admitted burglary, also stole the sex toys in the raid, a Crown Prosecution Service representative confirmed.

Amy Packham, defending, said Smith, who has previous convictions for criminal damage, burglary and theft, had stolen to feed his drug habit.

She said: "It is quite plain this was an unsophisticated burglary. He was walking along the street and there was a window open.

"In order to feed his drug habit he took the opportunity."

Sentencing Smith to three years jail, Judge Anthony Niblett said: "She had gone out to walk her dog and came back to find her house had been entered, as it turns out, by you.

"You have a very bad record. You have been before the court for similar matters of dwelling house burglaries.

"Your motivation, as with so many others, is drug addiction."
