Chichester did their best to guarantee their highest possible finish by closing with a 2-1 victory over visitors Sidley United who led at half time through an own goal.

Paul Thomas levelled for Chi from the penalty spot after Jamie Laidlaw was fouled when through on goal while Steve Leigh got the winner when he nodded home.

Chi boss Adie Girdler admitted: "We shot ourselves in the foot with our results against Sidlesham and Ringmer and have just not done enough to finish runners-up.

"We are happy with what we have achived this season and I am disappointed the County League did not give us the three points we felt we should have had earlier in the season against Wick when we felt they played ineligible players."

Sidlesham continued to climb the table with teenager Joe Leggett again on the mark in their 2-0 win over form side Redhill.

Leggett scored the winner last Monday against Chichester and his strike from the edge of the box put Richard Towers' side ahead. Glenn Bridgeman wrapped it up after a neat move with Mark Wozniak.

Towers said: "We played well and it was a good one to win as Redhill were the form side. We finish above Ringmer but can't go higher than fourth because of other results."

Ringmer slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Hassocks after losing a 1-0 lead and conceding twice in the last three minutes. Matt Pachent put Ringmer in front but an own goal from Ashley Low's cross followed by a Pat Harding penalty and simple close range finish turned the game on its head.

Selsey manager Danny Hinshelwood was disappointed his side could only take a point off visitors Burgess Hill as they fought out a 1-1 draw.

John Bines' superb strike capped a great first half for the hosts but a mistake in defence in the second allowed Phil Churchill to level for the champions.

Hinshelwood admitted: 'I am disappointed and I felt like we got beat at the end as we dominated the first half but then threw it away. However, Burgess Hill never know they are beaten and that mentality is why they are champions and we are in mid-table."

East Preston came from two down to draw 2-2 with Southwick.

Matt Huckett reduced the arrears and Russ Tomlinson bundled home the leveller after a corner had caused chaos.

EP boss Vic Short was disappointed not to win even though Wickers were in charge at one stage through Simon Funnell and Graham Martin.
