Traffic-choked roads are the bane of motorists' lives, adding more hours on to long working weeks.

With more road and housing developments earmarked throughout Sussex in years to come, the problem is only going to get worse.

So Eastbourne Borough Council's move to reduce unnecessary car-use by its employees should be congratulated.

It has laid down measures designed to ease pollution and traffic flow, such as car-sharing and incentives to those who cycle in to work.

Council officials predict less congestion, better air quality and more parking spaces around residential areas like Old Orchard Road.

It is even looking to secure Government money to buy some electric pool cars.

The council recognises that as one of Eastbourne's largest employers it has a part to play in helping free up congestion and cut fumes.

Let's hope staff able to support the plan do so, if only to avoid them stewing in tailbacks at home time.
