David Norris made it ten wins in ten races in the British League Cup as Eastbourne Eagles steamrollered the Isle of Wight 55-34 at Arlington Stadium yesterday.

Norris rattled up his second 15-point maximum in the competition on an afternoon that provided a benefit for Eastbourne's top riders.

Joe Screen was unbeaten in four outings, while Dean Barker dropped his only point in five rides to Adam Shields.

The Islanders, who came into the match on the back of four wins and a draw in the cup, were no match for an unfamiliar-looking Eagles team minus Mark Loram and Joonas Kylmakorpi and with Shields lining up for the opposition.

Eastbourne riders won 13 of the 15 races, only missing out to tactical substitute efforts by Glen Phillips and Shields.

The Islanders' cause was not helped by Danny Bird, who won the Premier League pairs last year with Shields, failing to complete four laps in his first three attempts, twice retiring and then crashing through the boards.

They also failed to take advantage of a golden double tactical opportunity in heat eight which might have produced an 8-1 and reduced the deficit to six points.

Eight of the first nine races failed to provide four finishers, including Bird's three blow-outs and an uncharacteristic tumble by Shields.

Referee Rob Perks also fined Chris Mills and warned him about his conduct after he stayed on the track after falling.

The best race of the afternoon by a long chalk was heat 13 which saw Shields split Screen and Barker, half a dozen yards covering all three riders as they flashed over the line.

The next was not bad, either, with Shields at last getting his wheel in front, and Gary Stead roaring past Ray Morton on the last lap and then holding him off for second place.

The rest, though, was nearly all one-way traffic.
