A pilot escaped with minor injuries when his helicopter stalled in mid-air.

The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in woodland at Brightling, near Robertsbridge, shortly after 5pm yesterday.

The machine was badly damaged but the pilot, who lives near Heathfield, had only cuts and bruises.

He was thought to have been carrying a passenger, who escaped unharmed.

The pilot was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings but was expected to be discharged last night.

The helicopter took off from Lydd airport in Kent and was believed to be heading for Shoreham.

Fire crews were called to soak up 150 litres of aviation fuel.

An air accident team launched an investigation into the crash last night.
