The season at Brighton Racecourse will open with a bang next Thursday.

Racegoers will be welcomed with £250,000 worth of improvements to the facilities including a freshly painted grandstand, refitted restaurant and a new public bar in the paddock enclosure.

Prize money this year is at an all-time high of £800,000 and this will lead to an improvement in the class of horse and standard of racing.

Among the 22 days scheduled will be Super Saturday on May 3, the first Saturday fixture for 30 years.

The £20,000 Doug Wood Gold Trophy will be the feature race. The new book 'The Brighton Races' will be launched the same day.

Post time next Thursday is 2pm when Brighton will welcome the local lingerie and fashion store, Lucy d'Auvergne of Steyning, as sponsor once again of the lady riders' series.

For the sake of Lucy's models, who will be showing the latest styles and not much more in the parade ring, let's hope the day is warm and dry.
