A 15-year-old girl was shot in the head with a BB gun during a drive-by style attack.

The teenager was struck just above her eye as she walked with a group of teenagers along Basin Road, Chichester.

An ambulance was called but she did not need hospital treatment.

A 16 and 17-year-old were arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm but have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police suspect the girl was shot from a passing vehicle, between 11am and 11.30am on March 24.

Investigating officer PC Dave Phillips said: "This girl was extremely lucky not to have been hit in the eye.

"BB guns are not toys. They look like a firearm and have the potential to cause serious injury and great alarm.

"Particularly in the current climate, I cannot overemphasise the need to act responsibly with this kind of weapon.

"If a juvenile owns a BB gun, they need to understand the potential consequences of using it to inflict injury or alarm.

"Parents of children who own a BB gun are urged to take responsibility and ensure they know how, when and why it is being used."

PC Phillips said anyone who had suffered a similar attack should contact police.
