The champagne flowed at the 100th birthday party of a woman who made machine guns for soldiers during the Second World War.

Anne Randall celebrated her centenary at Fernbank rest home, Gratwicke Road, Worthing, in the company of relatives, friends and Mayor of Worthing Eric Mardell.

Mrs Randall, an avid crossword fan known to her acquaintances as Suzie, also received a telegram from the Queen.

Formerly a keen golfer, Mrs Randall lived in South Africa for about ten years before returning to England and settling in Worthing about 15 years ago.

She had two husbands, the first of whom was killed in a bombing raid on Liverpool during the war, when she worked at an armoury in Nottingham.
