First the Tories wheeled out their lame-duck leader, Iain Duncan Smith. Now they bring along Michael Howard, a relic of John Major's government, to spin more untruths about council tax under Labour. Voters need the facts.
Under the Tories, local government funding was cut by seven per cent during their last four years in office. Labour has spent 25 per cent extra on local government since taking power in 1997.
All local councils have had an above-inflation grant settlement this year. In Tory-run Adur, they have had a 12.5 per cent increase but still think they can get away with a council tax rise of 30 per cent by blaming the Government.
Average council tax is lower under Labour councils (£738) than under Tory (£833) or Lib Dem ones (£824). Thankfully, the Greens are not trusted
to run any councils in this
country. Heaven knows what they would charge.
Labour is cutting red tape, not front-line services, while the Tories promise 20 per cent cuts in public spending across the board if returned to power. What would this mean for our schools and social services? What do you get for voting Tory? You pay more and you get less.
