A driver was killed instantly when his car was involved in a late-night head-on collision with a Post Office mail lorry in East Sussex.

The accident, between a Ford Iveco Post Office lorry and a Fiat Tipo, happened on the A21 at Robertsbridge.

An off-duty paramedic was first on the scene at 11.40pm on Friday but was unable to save the Fiat driver, a 26-year-old from the Robertsbridge area.

The lorry driver, a 57-year-old man from Tonbridge, Kent, escaped with cuts. He was taken to the Conquest Hospital, Hastings, for checks.

The road was closed for more than four hours while traffic police carried out inquiries into the early hours of Saturday.

Police had not released the name of the dead man this morning, saying formal identification had yet to take place.
