The front-page article (The Argus, February 21) on Brighton and Hove City Council's failure, after four years, to put in place the correct parking restrictions in George Street, Hove, sums up the frustration felt by city residents on the lack of will by the the council to do any job properly.

Councillor Simon Battle who, along with our MP, Ivor Caplin, has taken all the glory for this pedestrianisation scheme, is now leaving the old Vallance ward and taking his vast experience to Goldsmid ward. I wish the residents luck if he and Frieda Warman-Browne are elected for a further four years there.

We have examples of long-serving councillors not standing for re-election in May but still trying to leave a reminder of themselves behind, as in Chris Morley, praising and trying to push through the "landmark" buildings being proposed all over our city. What an epitaph that will be.

These people have been in power too long. We need to bring in new blood, candidates with fresh ideas and the energy to look at problems without interference from the Government.

No wonder the electorate is cynical. This council has dragged us all down and those of us who are standing for election in May are struggling with its legacy.

-Averil Older, prospective Conservative councillor for Central Hove (formerly Vallance ward)
