The death of PC Tok Ezobi was devastating for all who knew him but particularly for his pregnant partner.
Now Wendy Ezobi has suffered a further blow by being told she cannot register him as the father of their newborn child.
Miss Ezobi is quite right to fight all the way for her dead partner to be legally recognised as the father of her child.
The law is adding insult to the injury of losing a caring partner who was also a brave and able police officer.
Miss Ezobi should be able to prove her case by using DNA but it will be a costly and emotionally draining exercise.
As well as giving their daughter a certain start in life, the legacy of this difficult legal challenge should be to ensure Tok's name lives on - both for her and others who find themselves in such a tragic situation.
