A council wants a fairer share of money spent on improving roads in West Sussex.

Adur District Council has protested about the amount set aside by county transport bosses for road schemes for the next financial year.

West Sussex County Council spends less than two per cent of its highways budget on projects in Adur.

District councillors believe the figure should be more in line with the 7.1 per cent residents pay through their council tax.

They are compiling their own list of roads in need of work and Adur's executive policy board is asking for an urgent meeting with county transport chiefs.

At a meeting earlier this month, the board passed a resolution "protesting that the local spend allocated to Adur is wholly inadequate".

It wants a more fairly- distributed budget based on population and known deprivation affecting areas, such as Southwick and Shoreham.

These include the Shoreham Footbridge and Middle Road, Shoreham, as well as safer pedestrian crossings in Southwick town centre and Southwick Street.

Labour member Brian Whipp, who is both a district and county councillor, said he was astounded by Adur's road repair allocation.

He said: "We contribute more than seven per cent of the county's council tax yet they are ignoring the vital road repairs and safety measures needed in Adur."
