A girl of five and her mother are out of hospital and doing well after they were at the centre of a dramatic sea rescue.
The pair spent part of the weekend in St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, recovering from the effects of spending half an hour in the icy sea off Bognor.
Three police officers and a member of staff from Bognor pier swam to the rescue after hearing the woman and child were in distress 100 yards from the shore, under the pier, on Friday lunchtime.
A police spokeswoman said today: "Both are out of hospital and are fine. The young girl is being cared for and the mother has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
"Both are physically well as are the police officers and pier worker who rescued them."
PC Gary Relf and pier worker Kevin Murphy managed to reach the stranded pair while two other officers, PC Peter Hawkins, and PC Phil Duffy, returned to the shore and helped throw lifebelts to them before the emergency rescue teams arrived.
The girl was winched to safety by a Coastguard helicopter and a lifeboat then rescued the 31-year-old woman.
