A conman posing as Aussie film star Paul Hogan tried to trick a Sussex woman into revealing her bank details.

The scam came to light after a woman told police she had received a call from a man with an Australian accent.

He rang his intended victim claiming to be Hogan, star of Crocodile Dundee, saying that he was hosting a game show on Australian television.

The trickster told her she had won £200,000 and the money would be paid into her bank if she gave him her account details.

However, the woman did not believe a word of it and put the phone down, despite his protests that he really was Hogan.

She reported the call to her home in White Styles Road, Lancing, to the police.

Sergeant Mike Balmer said: "She had heard of similar cons involving people from Canada and Nigeria claiming they had cash prizes to give away in return for bank details.

"People should never reveal that sort of thing to people over the phone as genuine organisations do not operate that way."
