Like David Churchill, I, too, was surprised the two boys injured while cycling on the pavement recently were not duly reprimanded.

I believe, not so long ago, some lads were caught in similar circumstances and were each fined £30 with much parental protest.

It can be very frightening, especially for elderly people, to be suddenly overtaken by a speeding cyclist on the pavement.

On one occasion when it happened to me, the cyclist requested me to "walk in a straight line in future".

What has happened to the law, quite apart from front and rear lights at night and cycle bells if they are still around?
