Dave Beasant is convinced Albion can stay up, despite an agonising end to their four-match unbeaten League run.

The Seagulls go into tomorrow night's home game in hand against Beasant's old club Wimbledon still three points adrift at the foot of the table and five from safety.

It follows Saturday's unfortunate 1-0 defeat at Walsall, when 43-year-old Beasant made his debut in goal.

"I have only been in the camp for a few days, but the lads are lively and they are not despondent," he said.

"Everyone feels there is a way out and the way we performed in the second half I can believe that.

"In the next game that we get a victory it could build from there and hopefully we can get on a run."

Albion bombarded Walsall in the second half after Jorge Leitao's seventh minute header.

Bobby Zamora hit the bar twice, substitute Simon Rodger crashed a shot against the upright, Paul Brooker had an effort cleared off the line and a last-gasp header by sub Gary Hart forced James Walker into a brilliant save.

Beasant said: "It was disappointing to concede the way we did early on and we didn't put them on the back foot much in the first half.

"After a few words from the manager at half-time the attitude and application was top notch. You won't see many sides put a home team under so much pressure but come away with a 1-0 defeat.

"I thought we did very well and I am sure if we continue to apply as much pressure and workrate as that we are going to start a little run going.

"Everyone was dejected in the dressing room, but the manager told the boys they hadn't let anyone down and they have got nothing to fear.

"You were thinking one of them would go in and Jimmy Walker's save in the last couple of minutes was outstanding.

"To come out of a game with that many chances and not manage to get on the scoresheet was disappointing."

Injury-plagued Paul Kitson had to be replaced on the bench by Paul Rogers after feeling the hamstring injury he sustained in the reserves last week during the warm-up.

Boss Steve Coppell said: "He hadn't had a fitness test and it was obvious straight away he couldn't play a part in the match."

Richard Carpenter, replaced by Rodger at half-time, is doubtful tomorrow night due to a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Coppell has rubbished a report that Tottenham tried to sign Zamora on loan before the Premiership transfer window closed last Friday.
