Hundreds of people have objected to plans for turning a care home into a hostel for homeless people.

The scheme goes before Brighton and Hove planning committee for a decision on Wednesday.

Planning officer Steve Walker is recommending the councillors to go for refusal on the building in Eaton Gardens, Hove.

He said the council wanted to resist the loss of nursing homes that could meet new national minimum standards.

Many objectors are worried there would be increased noise. They also fear some of the homeless would suffer from drink or drug addiction plus mental health problems.

Police said short-term hostel use might be associated with an increase in crime and that if permission were granted it should be temporary.
