The new organisers of the Bognor Birdman Rally got in a flap yesterday to celebrate saving this year's event.

There were serious doubts about the future of the world-famous competition until Virgin Atlantic chairman Sir Richard Branson stepped in.

Sir Richard stumped up the £25,000 prize for a 100m human-powered flight to mark the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight.

It is even rumoured that he may have a go at the competition himself.

Arun District Council said it was "delighted" by Virgin's involvement.

Among the representatives at the photocall yesterday were council leader Richard Dickinson and Cabinet member with responsibility for leisure, Oliver Wingrove.
