A woman and her disabled son escaped from their home last night when fire broke out.

Firefighters arrived at the house in Tillstone Street, Kemp Town, Brighton, to find the dining room and kitchen area alight but said the woman had done the correct thing by closing the door to the room to contain the fire before escaping with her son in his wheelchair.

No one else was in the house.

The fire burned the kitchen and dining area and damaged toys and clothes in the room. The rest of the house was smokelogged.

Firefighter Anthony Bush, of Roedean fire station, said: "It was under control in 20 minutes. We were there within two-and-a-half minutes."
