Just under 2,000 people were treated at Worthing and Southlands hospitals' accident and emergency wards during the Christmas period.

Despite the rush, only 200 patients waited longer than four hours before being attended to in the period from December 16 to 29.

Jeannie Baumann, the trust's director of clinical services, said: "Our winter plans have worked well.

"We have come under sustained pressure, especially for beds in highdependency areas.

"We have seen a lot of patients and it has seemed this year that more patients have needed intensive treatment.

"The staff throughout the hospital have worked hard, both on the frontline and behind the scenes to achieve this.

"Traditionally however, the busiest period of the year is during the next couple of weeks.

"With the colder weather, we would urge people to make sure they keep themselves warm and to take all sensible precautions."
