Here we go again. Southern Water is looking for a sewage treatment plant site somewhere in the Brighton and Hove area.

This follows the rejection by a public inquiry inspector of a scheme to upgrade the existing site at Portobello, Telscombe Cliffs.

Eight sites have been suggested and all will attract enormous opposition. For while everyone produces sewage, few people want a plant anywhere near where they live, work or play.

Some sites can be eliminated right away. Ovingdean is much too prominent while Black Rock is earmarked for leisure.

Shoreham Harbour would mean building a main sewer going west rather than east.

But the remaining five are all worthy of consideration and are the only possible serious contenders.

The plant has to go somewhere.

Brighton and Hove is the only major resort in the South that does not have modern sewage treatment.

Southern Water has to produce such a plant in order to comply with strict new European Union rules.

Difficult choices have to be made about this plant, which cannot be avoided any more than the inevitable debate over where to dispose of waste.

There is no point in any councillors or residents simply saying Not In My Back Yard.

This plant has to go in somewhere and the sooner it is built the better.
