Another step towards the creation of a new university for East Sussex was taken last night at a contract-signing ceremony.
Hastings College and the University of Brighton formally joined in partnership to lead the founding of University Centre Hastings (UCH).
The university looks set to be created at several sites across Hastings as part of the £400 million regeneration package for the town and neighbouring Bexhill.
Council leaders believe the university will help spark a revival of the ailing resort, ranked among the top 30 in the UK deprivation index.
By luring thousands of students into the area, they believe many areas of Hastings' flagging economic areas will be revived.
University vice chancellor Sir David Watson said: "We look forward to the new exciting developments."
